Of Human Bandage Epub begins with Helen Carey’s passing, Philip Carey’s beloved mother of nine years. Philip had lost his father a few months earlier, and he has a club foot. He is sent to live with Louisa and William Carey, his aunt and uncle, now that he is an orphan. Philip resides in the vicarage of his uncle. Philip’s uncle is distant, despite Aunt Louisa’s best efforts to raise him. Philip enjoys reading to escape his everyday life because his uncle has a large library.
Philip is sent to a boarding school in less than a year. He will attend Oxford, according to his aunt and uncle. It is difficult for Philip to make friends with other students due to his disability and sensitive nature. Philip finds out that he could get a scholarship to go to Oxford, which his uncle and the headmaster of the school think is a good idea. However, Philip wants to go to Germany.
