Plot Review:
Henry Dorsett Case is a low-level hustler in Chiba City, Japan,’s dystopian underworld. Case, formerly known as a “console cowboy” and skilled computer hacker, was caught stealing from his employer. Case suffered damage to his central nervous system as punishment, rendering him unable to access the “matrix,” a virtual reality dataspace.
On behalf of a shadowy former US military officer named Armitage, Molly Millions, an enhanced “razorgirl” and mercenary, approaches Case and offers to cure him for his work as a hacker. The case is in agreement, and though poison sacs are inserted into his blood vessels, his nervous system is fixed. Armitage will have the sacs removed if Case completes the task; If not, they will explode and disable him once more.
Case and Molly are tricked by Armitage into stealing a ROM module that contains the saved consciousness of legendary cyber-cowboy McCoy Pauley, one of Case’s mentors.
