Plot Review:
Doctor John Watson is looking for a place to live in 1881 after returning to London from the Second Anglo-Afghan War. Watson is warned about Holmes’s eccentricities, but an old friend informs him that Holmes is looking for someone to split the rent at 221B Baker Street. After assessing each other and the rooms, Holmes and Watson move in together.
Holmes reveals that he works as a “consulting detective” and has clients as frequent guests. Watson’s shock turns into disbelief after Holmes demonstrates his ability to deduce. In a murder case, a telegram requests a consultation. Holmes and Watson travel to the crime scene, a vacant house on Brixton Road, together.
Gregson and Lestrade are currently on the scene as inspectors. Documents discovered on the victim’s person indicate that he has a secretary named Joseph Stangerson. The victim is identified as Enoch Drebber, a Cleveland, Ohio, resident. “RACHE,” which means “revenge” in German, is written in red on one wall. Holmes dismisses this as a scheme to fool the police.
